With a personal love for the great outdoors and over three decades of experience in professional photography, Julian Calverley has become one of the UK’s most revered landscape and advertising photographers. He is an early ambassador for ALPA Cameras and the Director of the ALPA Escapes photography masterclasses. He independently works for direct clients.
Hooked from an early age by the beauty of the Scottish Highlands, Julian has carved out a unique cinematic style of landscape photography that is instantly recognisable.
Drawn to the quality of light that autumn and winter bring, visiting these environments time and time again, often in extreme weather, allows him to witness the elements in all their different states and to truly experience the spirit of a place.
One element in particular – water, both in liquid and cloud form – features heavily in his compositions. Julian often brings the unpredictable movement of water into his landscape work, harnessing the beauty and motion of mountain rivers, streams, shorelines and skies. Influenced by years working in a traditional wet darkroom, his extensive post-production skills are then applied, with many hours devoted to each image. As a result, the finished pieces command a theatrical air, their atmospheric conditions beautifully observed.
Julian’s landscape work is held in many private collections around the world, with his latest large format book of Scottish landscapes North Northwest, winning both the BBD&P ‘Best British Book’ & ‘Book of the Year’.
He is an AOP Awards finalist and has been featured numerous times in Lürzer’s Archive '200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide' and is a Communication Arts Photography Annual and Graphis Gold winner.
With the allure of the wild continuing to inspire him, Julian is focusing more on his landscape work than ever before.
Julian about his work with ALPA cameras:
"Back in 2006, having recently moved over from film, to a digital medium format workflow, I was searching for a camera system to somehow replace my Mamiya RZ67 and Ebony 5x4.
I'll be honest, the search was not going well, until I came across the ALPA of Switzerland stand, at Photokina in Cologne.
And there it was... the ALPA 12 SWA.
A simple, ultra precise modular tool made with considered materials and engineered to the highest standard.
A thing of great beauty, the likes of which I had never seen.
Having always enjoyed the experience of working slowly, with manual cameras, the ALPA provides me with that.
The precision and control that I need, while all the while being beautifully tactile.
My ALPA cameras have become a deeply integral part of how I see the world and critical to my picture making process.
Simply put, I feel at one with them”
