Goran
Potkonjak
Goran Potkonjak, born in Croatia in 1968, was on his way to either Amsterdam or Ireland in 1991 but couldn’t decide, so he got stuck in Switzerland. Before leaving Croatia, he studied Chemistry, Geology, and Palaeontology at University of Zagreb but left in favor of Photography, which he began pursuing seriously at the age of 18. He claims that light has a voice, and sometimes he can hear it whispering. When he wanders through cities or works in his studio, it feels as if he’s following an invisible conductor who whispers the perfect composition into his ear.
He has a camera he calls "The Mysterious Beast" because, apparently, it takes pictures on its own when he’s not looking.
In his studio, there’s a strict rule No.1: no long conversations before he starts shooting. Goran insists that words can confuse the light, making it harder to capture what truly matters. Instead, he prefers a moment of silence to let the shadows settle into their rightful places.
In his studio, there’s a strict rule No.2: very long conversations before he starts shooting. Goran believes that nothing worthwhile can happen until everyone involved has talked themselves into exhaustion. It’s not just about breaking the ice – it’s about melting it completely. Only then, he claims, can the light and shadows relax enough to play their part.
While traveling in the Far East, Goran once paused in a bustling intersection, noticing an odd rhythm in the chaos—a pattern of shadows and movement that felt deliberate. Following its subtle cues, he found that big cities thrive on contradictions, where relentless energy often gives way to surprising stillness, a balance he now captures in every frame.
