Beim Workshop »Architektur- und Industriefotografie im digitalen Mittelformat« erarbeiten die maximal zehn Teilnehmer*innen ihre ganz persönliche Perspektive auf ein herausragendes Gebäude der Industriegeschichte: die OSRAM-Werke in Berlin Spandau. Von jeher bildet die Architekturfotografie eine Disziplin der Fotografie in der grosse Aufnahmeformate und Kameras, die Funktionen zur perspektivischen Korrektur wie den Ausgleich stürzender Linien bieten, eine Schlüsselrolle übernehmen.
In diesem Workshop haben Sie die Möglichkeit mit Kameras der Hersteller ALPA und Phase One, sowie digitalen Backs von Phase One ausgiebig zu arbeiten.
Der Workshop wird in Deutsch stattfinden. Zukünftige Workshops werden auch in Englisch stattfinden.
Kennenlernen der Teilnehmer und des Dozenten Alexander Schippel. Er ist ein versierter Architekturfotograf, der mit seinen Arbeiten Massstäbe setzt. Er stellt eigene Fotografien vor und spricht anhand der Bilder bereits gestalterische und technische Themen des Genres an.
Nach einer kurzen theoretischen technischen Einleitung geht es konkret um Themen wie das Shiften, die Wirkung verschiedener Objektive, den Effekt von Perspektiven und das Kennenlernen der Kameratechnik.
Wir steigen unmittelbar in die Praxis ein und nutzen als Motiv die historischen OSRAM-Werke in Berlin-Spandau.Das Areal in der Nonnendammallee gehört zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe und wurde 1927 im Stil der Neuen Sachlichkeit erbaut. Aktuell wird eine denkmalgeschützte Sanierung der Gebäude durch das Architekturbüro David Chipperfield geplant. Das gibt uns die einmalige Chance, den Zwischenzustand vor dem Umbau fotografisch festzuhalten. Alexander Schippel begleitet die Workshop-Teilnehmer während des gesamten Aufnahmetages, berät bei grundsätzlichen technischen Fragen, wie der optimalenTiefenschärfe, dem Korrigieren von stürzenden Linien, aber auch bei allen künstlerischen Aspekten der Bildkomposition. Die Kameras mit den PhaseOne-Backs erlauben es dem Fotografen, eine der Architektur entsprechende, genaue Umsetzung des Motivs zu entwickeln. Diese Fähigkeit der Kamera professionell zu nutzen und künstlerisch umzusetzen ist zentrales Thema des ersten Workshoptages.
Treffpunkt: 10.00 Uhr Nonnendammallee OSRAM-Werke Tor2. Kameras und Stative werden für alle Teilnehmer zur Verfügung gestellt, eigene Kameras können aber selbstverständlich auch verwendet werden. Verpflegung für den Tag bitte mitbringen, der Food-Truck ist noch im Bau…
Für diesen Tag stehen uns ausreichend Kameras wie die ALPA 12 MAX und Phase One XT sowie Backs wie das IQ 4 mit 150 MP zur Verfügung.
Der zweite Workshoptag widmet sich der Einführung in die Software Capture One und der Ausarbeitung der Bilderserie mit Capture One (etwa Lens Cast Correction und die Verzeichnungskorrektur). Einige Bilder werden wir exemplarisch in unseren p:berlin laboratories printen, um auch den Schritt von der digitalen Aufnahme zum Druck zu demonstrieren. Die ausführliche Bildbesprechung mit Ludwig Rauch, dem künstlerischen Berater der p: berlin academy, bildet den Abschluss des Workshops.
Alexander Schippel wurde 1979 in Berlin geboren und wuchs im angrenzenden Umland der Metropole auf. Seine Ausbildung zum Fotografen erhielt er von 1997 bis 2000 an der Freien Universität Berlin. Bereits im Abschlussjahr des Studiums erschien im Jovis Verlag eine erste Veröffentlichung seiner Fotografien: Potsdamer Platz – Urbane Architektur für das neue Berlin. Mit der Gründung des Atelier Schippel erfolgte 2004 eine verstärkte Hinwendung zu künstlerischer Fotografie. Längere Projekte brachten ihn unter anderem in die Lausitz (2011) und an die Berliner Staatsoper, deren komplette Sanierung er sechs Jahre lang künstlerisch dokumentierte (2018 erschienen bei Hatje & Cantz).
Alexander Schippel ist Gründer und Leiter von p: photography unlimited e.V. Der Verein versteht sich als förderndes Netzwerkund künstlerischer Produktionsort für Fotografen und Fotografinnen in Zeitendes radikalen Umbruchs der Fotografie.
Alexander Schippel kuratiert regelmässig Ausstellungenin Galerien und arbeitet an weiteren Bildbänden. Zurzeit fotografiert er die Sanierung des Bauhaus-Archivs und der Komischen Oper in Berlin. Schippels Arbeiten befinden sich in öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen u.a. im Deutschen Historischen Museum Berlin und in der Kunstsammlung des Deutschen Bundestages.

In the workshop "Architectural and industrial photography in digital medium format", a maximum of ten participants will develop their own personal perspective on an outstanding building in industrial history: the OSRAM factory in Berlin Spandau. Architectural photography has always been a discipline of photography in which large formats and cameras that offer functions for perspective correction such as the correction of distorted lines play a key role.
In this workshop you will have the opportunity to work extensively with cameras from the manufacturers ALPA and Phase One, as well as digital backs from Phase One.
The workshop will be held in German language. Future workshops will be offered in English.
Get to know the participants and the lecturer Alexander Schippel. He is an accomplished architectural photographer who sets standards with his work. He presents his own photographs and uses the images to address creative and technical topics of the genre. After a short theoretical technical introduction, the focus is on specific topics such as shifting, the effect of different lenses, the effect of perspectives and to become familiar with camera technology.
We dive straight into the practice and use the historic OSRAM factory in Berlin-Spandau as a motif: the site in Nonnendammallee is a UNESCO World Heritage monument and was built in 1927 in the New Objectivity style. A heritage-protected refurbishment of the buildings is currently being planned by the architectural firm David Chipperfield. This gives us the unique opportunity to photographically capture the interim state before the renovation. Alexander Schippel accompanies the workshop participants throughout the entire day of shooting, advising on basic technical issues such as the optimum depth of field, correcting converging lines, but also on all artistic aspects of image composition. The cameras with the PhaseOne backs allow the photographer to develop a precise realisation of the motif in accordance with the architecture. Using this ability of the camera professionally and realising it artistically is the central theme of the first day of the workshop.
Meeting point: 10.00 a.m. Nonnendammallee OSRAM-Werke Tor2. Cameras and tripods will be provided for all participants, but you can of course also use your own cameras; please bring your own food for the day, our food truck is still under construction...
For this day we can provide several cameras such as the ALPA 12 MAX and Phase One XT as well as backs such as the IQ 4 with 150 MP.
The second day of the workshop is dedicated to an introduction to the Capture One software and the processing of the image series with Capture One (such as Lens Cast Correction and distortion correction). We will print some of the images in our p:berlin laboratories to demonstrate the step from digital capture to print. The workshop will conclude with a detailed discussion of the images with Ludwig Rauch, artistic advisor to the p:berlin academy.
Alexander Schippel was born in Berlin in 1979 and grew up in the neighbouring area of the metropolis. He trained as a photographer at the Free University of Berlin from 1997 to 2000. His first publication of his photographs was published by Jovis Verlag in the final year of his studies: Potsdamer Platz - Urbane Architektur für das neue Berlin. With the founding of Atelier Schippel in 2004, he increasingly focussed on artistic photography. Longer projects have taken him to places such as Lusatia (2011) and the Berlin State Opera, whose complete refurbishment he artistically documented for six years (published by Hatje & Cantz in 2018).
Alexander Schippel is the founder and director of p: photography unlimited e.V. The association sees itself as a supportive network and artistic production centre for photographers in times of radical transformations in photography.
Alexander Schippel regularly curates exhibitions in galleries and is working on further illustrated books. He is currently photographing the refurbishment of the Bauhaus Archive and the Komische Oper in Berlin. Schippel's work can be found in public and private collections, including the German Historical Museum in Berlin and the art collection of the German Bundestag.
